Women’s National Football: Karen Pais Hat-Trick Fashions Maharashtras Big Win



Kojikode: Former Indian junior striker Karen Pais grabbed the spotlight with a beautiful hat-trick that shaped Maharashtra’s (WIFA) out-of-the-box 6-0 victory over Arunachal Pradesh in a Group E championship match. In Monday’s remaining matches, Sandhya scored eight goals as Tamil Nadu beat Telangana 20-0 at Kozhikode while Himachal Pradesh beat Bihar 3-2 at Kuthuparamba Municipal Stadium. Parnita Tirkey scored one goal as Jharkhand upset Karnataka with just one goal; Delhi held Goa 1-1; Sikkim beat Jammu and Kashmir 5-0 and Assam beat Rajasthan 7-0. Maharashtra forwards were held in check by Arunachal defenders who showed courage and didn’t give much leeway to rival attackers in the first half. But, after the change of sides, Maharashtra came out on top and dominated the game for long stretches and got a 49th minute penalty which was successfully converted by Valencia to open the scoring.

After that, Maharashtra lost a few chances before Karen got the first of her three goals to double the lead in the 73rd minute. Three minutes later, the dashing Mumbai striker, who posted an impressive form of scoring, once again touched the goal to widen the lead 3-0. Valencia later scored their second goal in the 79th minute and then the Gondia district striker Trupti also scored with Maharashtra’s fifth goal in the 88th minute.

In the next minute, Karen showed an excellent finish finding the net for the third time to complete her hat-trick and seal Maharashtra’s fluid victory.
