Winterhawks acquire prospect Diego Buttazzoni from Medicine Hat

Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks, a proud member of the Western Hockey League, announced today that the club has acquired the rights of 2006-born forward Diego Buttazzoni from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for a conditional second-round selection in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft and a conditional fourth-round selection in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft.


Additionally, Portland later signed Buttazzoni to a standard WHL player deal ahead of the 2022-23 season.

“We are thrilled to acquire and sign Diego,” said senior vice president, head coach and general manager Mike Johnston, “He was a player we watched closely last year and had top of our draft list.”

Originally selected by Medicine Hat with the 37th overall pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, Buttazzoni played last season with Burnaby Winter Club U18 Prep – the same club that developed current Winterhawk Luca Cagnoni – and finished second on the team with 54 points in 32 games. . The Langley, BC native co-led his team with four goals in five playoff games to help BWC win a CSSHL championship.

Following his U18 campaign with BWC, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound forward played three regular season games with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and one with the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express, registering one goal and two assists in that four-game-playing time. Buttazzoni also appeared in seven BCHL playoff games with the Express, recording three playoff assists.

Buttazzoni is expected to report to Portland in time for the Neely Cup team’s training camp, scheduled for Sept. 1-4 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
