Take a close look at the hat-trick hero Jesus | Video | New

It was a very happy return for Mikel Arteta and the team after a successful pre-season program in Germany and the United States.

After four out of four wins on those two trips, we ran out of convincing 6-0 wins against the side who finished fourth in La Liga last season back in front of our supporters at the Emirates.

So, unsurprisingly, the manager was a very happy man after the game. Here is every word from the manager’s post-match press conference from our final pre-season friendly:

on the game…

We prepared to play against a team who have done very, very well in recent years, who have huge European experience and we wanted a different test. They have a different way of playing, a different character. The games you have to play in the game are something different and it’s good preparation for us, and there were many moments in the game that were for us. Obviously, it’s a big score but there are still a lot of things to improve.

on the quality of the defense…

It’s the connection between all the players, all the units, the intensity, the desire to win the ball as high up the pitch as possible. The moment we give it is about how the team responds, how compact we are, how willing we are when that press is beaten to come back and be compact again. It’s just a team effort and individually and collectively they really live the game in every ball and that’s what we ask them to do.

on Gabriel Jesus who settles so well…

You hope that will happen, but obviously a player has to adapt to a new city, a new club, new teammates and he did it very quickly and naturally. You can see the way they are looking for him on the pitch, on and off the ball, and what he is able to convey on this pitch as well, so I’m really happy.

on Martin Odegaard…

I think he makes Gabby better and he needs a threat in front of him because he’s a player who can find the last pass at any time. When he is in closed or open spaces we need someone to make him look better and I think the connection is already there and with the wingers too.

if we lacked movement up front last season…

We tried to improve the squad and recruit to improve and obviously there were things we didn’t have. We’ve tried to get them when we bring people in or develop our players and that’s always the goal.

on Gabriel Jesus’ role in the team…

What we see is everyone, not just Gabby, playing with that intensity and willingness to win the ball, favor mistakes and play as much as possible in the opposing half. You can’t do that if the players up front are walking, they’re not following, they don’t have that instinct and intention to bring about the things we want and Gabby is phenomenal at that.

on whether he is a full-fledged centre-forward…

Its versatility is well known. Now we use him like new, he can play as a winger, left and right. You can play with two strikes like we did in pre-season as well and change the form a bit. It gives us a lot of flexibility.

on the strength of the team…

We always hope to do something else if the market allows us. You’ve seen movement in the other direction over the past few days, so we want to get the perfect balance and blueprint we wanted from the start. Whether or not we can achieve that is another story, but I’m happy with the current situation.

on Bellerin after Tavares on loan…

We don’t know, we go on a case-by-case basis. For Nuno’s development, I think it’s going to be really important. Obviously, we signed Oleks in this position and we also have Kieran, who are two very strong players in this position, and we think Nuno’s best solution was to do so.

on Odegaard becoming captain…

What I have seen in the last 18 months since he has been with us, he has represented the values of this football club, the team, the teammates and the staff in the best possible way. He has displayed an ambition to take this club to a different level, to push this team and contribute to it, and how he is respected by everyone in the organization. He is also the captain of his national team and I think it was the right choice, and I am proud to announce it because I think he is a very good person to fulfill this commitment to the club.

on players who don’t take the knee…

I don’t know if we didn’t have it, there was so much going on with the two acts we had before the game. We didn’t play the song either, so there was a lot going on today and we had to prioritize what we could do. The kick-off was also delayed, so things just didn’t work out.

on the pre-season as a whole…

I am. We’ve had a mix of time here in London and being away, and we’ve played competitive matches against very different opponents and formations and team styles and behaviors. We also had different conditions, we were in Germany and we had to acclimatize to the weather there, and we went to the United States and it was the same, now we play with a different context and atmosphere as well , so in general I feel like the team is prepared. The ball will start rolling Friday night and that will be a different story.

on injured players being ready for Friday…

I think most of them will be, they will have to go through what they need this week and then hopefully we will have them available. They are missing minutes but we will have to accumulate that like any other injury we receive during the season.

on Zinchenko…

First, his mentality. He’s used to winning – winning is the only thing and winning the right way. He’s a perfectionist and a very demanding boy, I know him so well, and afterwards he brings qualities that we didn’t have in the group. It gives us a different option to play the role in different spaces, and I’m really happy to have it.
