If things are tight in a title race, the January transfer window can often make or break a season.
There are currently only four points between Celtic and Rangers in the Premiership, and the way the Hoops currently play little would bet on their downfall before the end of the year.
Ange Postecoglou was tipped to return to the market after succeeding with summer recruits such as Kyogo Furuhashi, Jota, Liel Abada and Josip Juranovic.
There’s no part of the team that needs urgent attention, but there are definitely areas that could do with more depth.
The Australian gaffer is set to be backed by the board again, and reports suggest it could return to the Japanese market with Kyogo already flourishing.
We already said this morning how he wanted the club to hit the ground running when the window opens.
Here, Scotland football look where Celtic should be looking to add.
It may seem strange to report this position, the Hoops having recruited two center-backs in Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers.
But the Sweden international in particular has looked fragile at times, although he seems to be closer to a game.
Stephen Welsh has also played quite a few games and has done quite well, but he is still inexperienced, and if the club want to make the Champions League next season, they can look for a more seasoned activist.
Another option has been Liam Scales, who looks more trustworthy at left-back, and new signing Osaze Urhoghide is yet to feature.
Christopher Jullien is reportedly set to return, but after a long layoff it may take some time to get back into shape.
Another factor is that Carter-Vickers only made a loan deal, and while it is possible that he will extend his contract beyond this season, Postecoglou cannot bank on that and might want a more permanent option.
The left side of the defense has been a problematic position for the Hoops this season and last.
Josip Juranovic has made the position his own in the last few games but is understandably on the right side and will likely be competing with Anthony Ralston for a place in the longer term.
Young winger Adam Montgomery performed admirably at times, and as mentioned, Scales was used from the bench, as he got so desperate at some stages that the forgotten man Boli Bolingoli replaced.
Greg Taylor recently signed a new contract and is clearly highly rated by the manager, but he will want someone else who is natural and reliable in the role.
Scotland football understands that the Hoops are already in talks with Japanese star Reo Hatate who operates mainly at left-back but may also play in midfield. On that note …
Winger / Forward
Another which at first glance may seem like a strange suggestion.
This would be due to the form of Kyogo, Jota and Abada. Then you have James Forrest, Mikey Johnston, and Giorgos Giakoumakis in reserve.
But in terms of a full-fledged center-forward, their lack of depth was exposed in the recent draw with Livingston. Kyogo rested and Giakoumakis took his place but proved unconvincing as the team drew 0-0.
Albian Ajeti also failed to deliver and is reportedly set to leave Celtic Park.
Postecoglou might want someone who can operate mid and offshore, which would explain why he would be interested in another Japanese player in Yokohoma F. Marinos’ Daizen Maeda.
Henrik Larsson’s son Jordan has also been linked with an emotional move.
