Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley gives Lincoln City counterpart a hat

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley believes Michael Appleton has done a brilliant job with Lincoln City since leaving the club in 2019.

Cowley will return to the club where he spent three seasons when Pompey visits Sincil Bank on Tuesday in a League One game.

Ahead of the match, the Portsmouth manager took the time to praise the work done by his Lincoln Appleton counterpart.

Cowley believes that on paper Lincoln was the best side in League One last season after making smart investments in the transfer market.

“They [Lincoln] have brilliant people behind the wheel and Michael Appleton did a brilliant job on our backs ”, Cowley said in an interview with The News.

“I think he’s a very good coach and I thought on paper last year that they were the best team in the division and I think they deserve this honor.

“It is certain that the recruiting they made over the past summer was simply exceptional.

“In a year where there was a salary cap, maybe it was easier because everyone had the same finances, but they still worked tirelessly and made so many smart decisions, in my opinion.”

Lincoln City’s performance last year shows what can be achieved when a team’s fundamentals are good, insists the Portsmouth manager, 43.

“When I looked at them on paper last year I really thought they were the best team in the division and I thank them for that.

“It just shows what could be achieved if you lay the right foundation. “

Lincoln and Portsmouth have similar records in League One’s last nine games, with Appleton’s men having 13 points and Cowley’s side 14 points.
