Patriots QB Mac Jones, Bears QB Justin Fields finish in top 5 for August

With each new NFL season, we take a look at top-selling jerseys early, and that list almost always ties into a rookie or two near the top. And indeed, a pair of rookie quarterbacks have done quite well when it comes to jersey sales so far, even though they have yet to play a game in an NFL regular season game.

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter pointed out on Thursday, the two rookie flaggers of the Chicago Bears Justin Champs and rookie New England Patriots signalman Mac Jones finished in the top five in player jersey sales for the month of August, by Fanatics. Fields finished fourth, a spot ahead of Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, while Jones finished a spot ahead Tom brady for n ° 2 in total. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen led the list.

The two first-round picks, Fields and Jones met in the National College Football Championship between Ohio State and Alabama for the 2020 season before hearing their names called into the top 15 several months later. And while the two have been a hit with their respective fans since the preseason began last month, only one seems to be on track to start Week 1.

Last week, the New England Patriots sent shockwaves through the NFL when the team released the league veteran and former first draft pick. Cam Newton, bringing an abrupt end to the competition between him and Jones that had been a major talking point throughout the offseason. As for Fields, he also competed with a veteran passer, as Chicago brought in Andy dalton this offseason. But despite the hype for Fields, the Bears remain determined to start Dalton this Sunday when the team launch their 2021 campaign.

While Fields has been touted for some time – he entered the 2020 season at Ohio State as one of college football’s top players and as a predicted candidate for Heisman after being a finalist in 2019 – the emergence of Jones over the past 12 months is something that no one, except maybe those in the Alabama football program, really saw coming. Jones was starting for Alabama for the first time in his college career in 2020 and doing so unexpectedly, as many were actual freshmen by then. Bryce Young to win the starting position. But Jones continued to throw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns throughout the season, leading the Crimson Tide to an SEC and national title.

Additionally, Jones won the Davey O’Brien Award, Manning Award and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.
