62 years ago, on November 1, 1959, Jacques Plante had a puck in his nose after a Andy Bathgate the shot hit the unmasked goalie.
At the time, the game was interrupted while Plante went to the coach’s room to be stitched up, just like any player.
But this time, Plante told Montreal coach Toe Blake that he would not return, unless he was allowed to wear the face mask he wore in training, the one Blake refused from him. let wear during a game.
Since there was no backup goaltender on the roster at the time, Blake nodded and allowed Plante to return, thinking he would revert to his old ways in a game or two.
But Plante went on a 10-0-1 streak in November and when he lost a few games in December Blake questioned the use of the mask, but Plante didn’t give in. By the way, in November, Plante allowed just 13 goals on 311 shots on goal including a pair of shutouts.
The rest is history.
The last goaltender not to wear a face mask in an NHL game was Andy Brown in 1974. It seems hard to believe the Pittsburgh goaltender would be so brave to face shots without face protection.
There were three games scheduled for Monday.

EDMONTON 5 SEATTLE 2
Leon Draisaitl scored twice and added two assists to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-2 victory over the Seattle Kraken. Draisaitl’s big game saw him tied with his teammate Connor mcdavid at the top of the NHL scoring race as both have 17 points after McDavid only managed one assist in the win.
The Oilers’ other three goals were scored by Duncan Keith, Kyle turris and Kailer yamamoto who all scored their first of the season. While it’s good for Keith and Turris to do it, it was really important for Yamamoto as the youngster has struggled all season and the Oilers really need him to provide a secondary offense for the team.
