James Wilson’s hat-trick helped Port Vale advance to the second round of the FA Cup with a 5-1 home win over Accrington.
Wilson scored with a cool finish on the half hour and completed his treble with two goals in the second half after Colby Bishop was sent off from Stanley for a nudge. Lewis Cass and George Lloyd also scored after Ethan Hamilton pulled one out.
In what was virtually the Valiants’ first offense, Wilson grabbed David Worrall’s ball and charged into the box to clinically beat Toby Savin.
Stanley should have been in the lead by then, but Hamilton shot his best chance over the bar 10 minutes later.
Vale, who is rising high in Sky Bet League Two, could have increased his lead early in the second half, but Wilson and James Gibbons were unable to capitalize on their chances.
The League One side’s chances of making a comeback were cut short by Bishop’s red card for violent conduct, and within minutes Wilson doubled the lead when he pierced a loose ball from a corner .
The forward then connected with Tom Conlon’s pass to hit his third.
Although Hamilton gave Accrington some consolation with five minutes remaining, Cass responded almost instantly to make it 4-1.
Lloyd rounded off the visitors’ miserable afternoon with Vale’s fifth goal in stoppage time.
