According to Tutto Mercato Web, the Tottenham scouts were on hand to watch the Italian Under-21 squad take on the Romanian Under-21 gems on Tuesday.

What is the story?

Well, the Italian media is not revealing who Tottenham were watching, although a number of players have stood out.

With AC Milan and Atletico Madrid also watching, Simone Canestrelli put his name in the spotlight with what was arguably the best game of his career.

The 21-year-old netted a hat-trick in front of the Tottenham scouts, which likely caused them to write his name – if they hadn’t already.

To make his triplets even more impressive, Canestrelli is not even a striker, nor a midfielder – the Italian is a defender!

If he continues to impress on loan at Crotone, it wouldn’t surprise us to see Spurs watching him when he returns to Empoli.

Is Tottenham’s scouting mission a sign of things to come under Antonio Conte?

With Antonio Conte at the helm and Fabio Paratici as Director of Football, there is a strong Italian contingent at Tottenham.

Obviously, this is represented in the recruitment plans.

In our opinion, this is a very sensible move on the part of the people of North London.

Conte and Paratici are experts at Italian football, and you’d like to think they’d know about the next big names on the horizon.

Moreover, Italy has just won EURO 2020, so the nation is clearly full of talented footballers.

Whether it’s Canestrelli or some other Italian prodigy, don’t be surprised to see them at Hotspur Way in the near future.
