2021 NFL jersey numbers: live updates on Washington changes

An NFL rule change in April gave players more options for how many they can wear on the court – but it comes at a price, literally. Some players jump at the chance to revert to their beloved college numbers or mix them up in some other way, while Tom Brady says he’s opposed to the idea.

Here’s what you need to know about NFL players who change their numbers:

What is the cost for an NFL player to change his jersey number?

If a player wants to change his shirt number, he must first buy unsold jerseys with his old number on it. Depending on the inventory of his jersey, this could add up!

Dalvin cook, for his part, chose to stick with his No.33 over the Minnesota Vikings because the price of his unsold jerseys would have been $ 1.5 million.

Teams, however, do not have to purchase a player’s existing jersey inventory if they cut it.

Which NFL players change their jersey number?

Arizona Cardinals

All-Pro Safety Baker Buddha is going from n ° 32 to n ° 3. He is well aware of the impact this could have on fans and has shown his appreciation for people who have already purchased his merchandise.

Three other cardinals have announced changes: running back Chase Edmonds from No.22 to No.2, cornerback Byron Murphy from No.33 to No.7 and defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence from No.92 to 90 ( a move that was possible before the NFL’s revised jersey rule went into effect). James Conner, after wearing number 30 in Pittsburgh, will represent number 6 in the desert.

Baltimore Ravens

linebacker Patrick queen announced that he will be upgrading from No.48 to No.6 for his second year.

On the offensive side, wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown goes from No. 15 to No. 5, a number that has not been worn by a Raven since Joe Flacco left Baltimore after the 2018 season.

Bison Tickets

Expanded veteran Emmanuel Sanders will wear number 1 in Buffalo. This will be his fourth different shirt number and his fifth different team.

Carolina Panthers

After consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, wide receiver DJ Moore moved from No.12 to No.2.

Chicago Bear

Eddie jackson became the first Bears player to take advantage of the new rule. He goes from # 39 to # 4, the same number he wore in Alabama. The newly acquired running back Damien williams will wear No.8 in Chicago after wearing No.26 with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dallas Cowboys

Linebacker Jaylon Smith moves up to No.9 despite having to buy back his old No.54 jerseys for a six-figure cost. He also reportedly got Tony Romo’s blessing to take the old QB number.

Denver Broncos

KJ Hamler returns to his Penn State number. The second-year gap will carry number 1 after donning number 13 in his rookie season. Cornerback Michael Ojemudia will move from No.23 to No.13.

Detroit Lions

Several veteran Lions are taking advantage of the new rules. Linebacker Jamie Collins goes from number 58 to number 8, the number he wore at the University of Southern Mississippi. Elsewhere in defense, cornerbacks Quinton Dunbar and Mike Ford take nos 1 and 2 respectively.

On the offensive side of the ball, the new extended player Tyrell Williams will wear the number 6.

Houston Texans

Marc Ingram will wear number 2 on his third NFL team. The former Saints and Ravens running back dropped from No.28 to start his NFL career to No.22 while still in New Orleans before donning No.21 in Baltimore.

Indianapolis Colts

Carson Wentz revealed his new jersey number with an impressive gesture to the Eagles superfan Giovanni Hamilton. The former Philadelphia QB will drop from No.11 to No.2 in Indy.

The Los Angeles Rams

Robert Woods prevailed in the battle for number 2 over the Rams. Jalen Ramsey wanted the number as well, but the wide receiver will be the one who leaves his number 17.

Ramsey, however, dropped from # 20, start of a jersey n ° 5 during an off-season Rams practice.

A few other returning Rams have made changes, with safety Jordan Fuller moving from No.32 to No.4 and cornerback Darious Williams moving from No.32 to No.4. Cam Akers also moving from No.23 to n ° 3.

Wideout DeSean Jackson will also take advantage of the new rule with his new squad and wear the No.1.

Miami dolphins

Three Dolphins receivers change to a single digit. Will Fuller will wear a new number on his NFL second team. After wearing No.15 for the past five years in Houston, he will be No.3 in Miami. Lynn Bowden Jr. goes from No.15 to No.6 and Allen Hurns goes from No.17 to No.8.

Minnesota Vikings

Patrick Peterson will sport a new number in his new team. After wearing the number 21 during his 10 years with the Cardinals, he will wear the number 7 – the number he wore at LSU – in Minnesota.

Peterson struck a deal with sophomore quarterback Nate Stanley, who previously held the number, for a good cause. The All-Pro cornerback will donate shoulder pads to the Stanley High School alma mater in Wisconsin in exchange for the number. Stanley moved up to No.14.

New England Patriots

Ja’Whaun Bentley became the first Patriots player to profit from the rule – a Bill Belichick would have “hated”. The linebacker goes from No.51, which he wore his first three years at Foxboro, to No.8.

Cornerback Jalen Mills and linebacker Matt Judon, who joined the Pats in free agency, also claim single-digit numbers, taking numbers 2 and 9 respectively.

Brandon Bolden will also wear a new number when he returns to the field in 2021 after retiring from the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. He moved from No.38 to No.25 to honor his grandfather, Frank Pitts, who won Super Bowl IV as the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver.

New York Giants

Sterling Shepard is in the process of going from number 87 he wore in his first five seasons in the NFL to number 3, the number he and his late father wore in Oklahoma. Mike Glennon was originally supposed to wear the number with the Giants.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles’ best two numbers are taken.

corner half Kill Darius wore number 24 in his first year with the Birds to honor Kobe bryant. Now Slay will be number 2, number Jalen hurts wore in his rookie season. The move has been made possible since Hurts went from No.2 to No.1, just like he did on the QB Depth Table for Philadelphia last season.

Quez Watkins also changed its number from # 80 to # 16, a decision that was allowed under the old rule.

San Francisco 49ers

Jason verrett cuts a digit from its old number, going from n ° 22 to n ° 2. Jaquiski Tartt also makes a change in the secondary, going from n ° 29 to n ° 26.

Seattle Seahawks

Quandre Diggs will wear the number that he and his brother, former NFL defensive back Quentin Jammer, wore with the Texas Longhorns, No.6. He told The Athletic’s “Seahawks Man 2 Man” podcast he decided between number 6 and number 23, the number Jammer wore in the NFL, after wearing number 37 in his first season with the Seahawks.

Carlos Dunlap changes jersey numbers for the second time last year. The defensive end went from No.96 to No.43 after the Bengals traded him to the Seahawks last season, but will now wear No.8.

Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon will wear a new jersey and number in 2021. Witherspoon is trading his No. 23 49ers jersey for a No. 2 Seahawks jersey.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Leonard Fournette does not share the same feelings towards the new rule as Brady.

The Super Bowl champion’s running back goes from number 28 to his college number, number 7. The number represents the seventh neighborhood in New Orleans, where he grew up.

“This is where I was born and grew up,” Fournette told the team website. “It’s just me. That’s what I stand for. I’m so committed to giving back to where I’m from and that really represents how special this place is to me. I’m just grateful.”

Titans of Tennessee

Julio Jones was offered n ° 11 by new Titans teammate and fellow wide receiver AJ Brown, but Jones refused. Instead, the seven-time Pro Bowler will be number 2 with Tennessee.
